Managing Children Profiles

StarKid makes it easy to manage multiple children, each with their own customized experience.

Adding Additional Children

You can add as many children as you need to your StarKid account. Each child gets their own:

  • Individual star balance
  • Custom avatar and profile
  • Personalized chores and rewards
  • Separate activity history

Adding a New Child

  1. From the main dashboard, click the "+" button
  2. Complete the child profile form
  3. Choose chores and rewards appropriate for their age
  4. Save the profile

Editing Child Profiles

You can modify any child's profile at any time through the Parents Panel:

  • Name changes: Update if they prefer a different name
  • Avatar updates: Let them choose a new avatar or upload a photo
  • Chore modifications: Add, remove, or modify chores as they grow
  • Reward adjustments: Update rewards to match changing interests

Switching Between Children

The main dashboard shows tabs for each child. Simply click on a child's tab to view and manage their specific profile.

Fairness Tip

Try to keep chore difficulty and reward costs relatively balanced between siblings to avoid feelings of unfairness. Adjust for age differences by giving younger children easier chores worth fewer stars.

Removing a Child Profile

If you need to remove a child's profile, you can do so from the Parents Panel. This action will:

  • Delete all their chores and rewards
  • Remove their star balance
  • Clear their activity history

Warning

Deleting a child profile cannot be undone. Make sure you really want to remove all their data before proceeding.

Managing Chores & Rewards

The heart of StarKid is the chore and reward system. Learn how to create, customize, and manage tasks that motivate your children.

Understanding Chores

Chores are tasks that children complete to earn stars. Each chore has:

  • Title: A clear, descriptive name
  • Star Value: How many stars the child earns (1-10)
  • Image: A visual representation to help children identify the task
  • Predefined Options: Choose from templates like "Do Dishes" (3 stars), "Brush Teeth" (1 star), or "Clean Bedroom" (5 stars)

Star Value Guidelines

  • 1-2 stars: Quick, easy tasks (5-10 minutes)
  • 3-4 stars: Medium tasks (15-20 minutes)
  • 5-7 stars: Challenging tasks (30+ minutes)
  • 8-10 stars: Major tasks or excellent behavior

Adding Custom Chores

Creating a Custom Chore

  1. Go to the Parents Panel
  2. Select the Chores Management section
  3. Fill in the chore title
  4. Set the star value (1-10)
  5. Choose an existing image or upload a custom one
  6. Click "Add Chore" to save

Understanding Rewards

Rewards are incentives that children can "purchase" with their earned stars. Each reward has:

  • Title: What the child will receive
  • Star Cost: How many stars required (1-100)
  • Image: A visual representation of the reward

Effective Reward Ideas

Time-Based

Extra screen time, later bedtime, one-on-one time with parent

Food Treats

Special snack, favorite meal, eating out, ice cream

Activities

Movie night, park visit, friend playdate, special outing

Small Items

Stickers, small toy, book, art supplies

Editing Chores and Rewards

You can modify existing chores and rewards at any time:

  • Click on any chore or reward in the Parents Panel
  • Update the title, star value/cost, or image
  • Save your changes

Balancing Tip

Make sure rewards are priced appropriately - children should be able to earn smaller rewards quickly (within a day or two) and larger rewards over a week or more.

Understanding the Star System

Stars are the currency of motivation in StarKid. Learn how to effectively manage and use the star system to encourage positive behavior.

Awarding Stars

There are several ways to give stars to your children:

Automatic Star Awards

  • Completing chores: Click on a chore when completed to automatically award its star value
  • Visual feedback: The interface shows a satisfying animation when stars are awarded

Manual Star Awards

  • Good Behavior button: Use the "+1 ⭐" button for spontaneous good behavior and positive actions
  • Naughty behavior button: Use the "-1 ⭐" button when correction is needed for negative behavior
  • Chore completion: Stars are automatically awarded when children complete their assigned chores
  • Balanced approach: The system allows both positive reinforcement and gentle corrections

How to Manage Stars

  1. Make sure the correct child is selected in the tab
  2. For chores: Click on the completed chore to automatically award stars
  3. For good behavior: Click the "Good Behavior +1 ⭐" button
  4. For corrections: Click the "Naughty -1 ⭐" button when needed
  5. Watch the star count update in real-time with smooth animations!

Removing Stars

The "Naughty -1 ⭐" button allows for gentle behavioral corrections:

  • Minor corrections: Use the "-1 ⭐" button for small behavioral issues
  • Learning moments: Help children understand consequences of actions
  • Balanced approach: Immediate feedback that's not too harsh
  • Teaching tool: Shows that actions have both positive and negative outcomes

Use Thoughtfully

The system works best with positive reinforcement. Use the naughty button sparingly and always explain why. Focus on celebrating good behavior more than correcting bad behavior.

Spending Stars on Rewards

When your child wants to claim a reward:

  1. They tell you which reward they want
  2. Check that they have enough stars
  3. Click on the reward to "purchase" it
  4. Stars are automatically deducted
  5. Provide the real-world reward

Star Economy Tips

  • Start generous: Make it easy to earn and spend stars initially
  • Adjust gradually: Fine-tune values based on your family's experience
  • Keep it moving: Stars should flow regularly, not accumulate unused
  • Celebrate milestones: Acknowledge when children reach star goals

Success Secret

The magic happens when children can see progress toward their goals. Make sure they can earn at least one small reward every day or two to maintain motivation!

History & Progress Tracking

StarKid automatically tracks all family activity, giving you valuable insights into your children's progress and patterns.

Understanding the History Page

The History page shows a chronological record of all star transactions in your family:

  • Stars earned: Which chores were completed and when
  • Stars spent: Which rewards were claimed
  • Manual adjustments: Any stars added or removed manually
  • Timestamps: Exact time and date of each activity

Filtering and Searching

Use the history tools to find specific information:

  • Filter by child: See activity for just one child
  • Filter by date: Look at specific time periods
  • Filter by type: Show only earned stars or only spent stars
  • Search: Find specific chores or rewards

Identifying Patterns

Use the history data to understand your family better:

  • Peak motivation times: When do chores get completed most often?
  • Popular chores: Which tasks do children prefer?
  • Reward preferences: What motivates each child most?
  • Progress trends: Are children completing more or fewer chores over time?

Celebrating Achievements

Use history data to recognize and celebrate milestones:

  • First rewards earned: Acknowledge early successes
  • Consistency streaks: Praise daily chore completion
  • Big goals reached: Celebrate when children save up for expensive rewards
  • Improvement over time: Show children how they've grown

Weekly Review Tip

Consider doing a weekly family review of the history page. Celebrate successes and discuss any patterns or challenges you notice together.

Parenting Tips & Best Practices

Make the most of StarKid with these expert tips and strategies from families who've found success with the system.

Getting Buy-In from Children

  • Involve them in setup: Let children help choose their chores and rewards
  • Start with favorites: Include chores they already like or do willingly
  • Make it visual: Show them how stars add up to rewards they want
  • Celebrate early wins: Make a big deal about their first successes

Age-Appropriate Guidelines

Ages 3-5: Preschoolers

  • Simple chores: Putting toys away, helping feed pets
  • Low star values: 1-2 stars per chore
  • Immediate rewards: Small treats, stickers, extra story time
  • Visual emphasis: Focus on pictures and simple counting

Ages 6-8: Early Elementary

  • Regular chores: Making bed, setting table, basic cleaning
  • Medium star values: 2-4 stars per chore
  • Short-term goals: Rewards achievable within a few days
  • Routine building: Focus on daily consistency

Ages 9-12: Older Elementary

  • Complex chores: Laundry, vacuuming, organizing spaces
  • Higher star values: 3-7 stars per chore
  • Bigger rewards: Special outings, electronics time, money
  • Goal planning: Help them plan and save for larger rewards

Ages 13+: Teenagers

  • Life skills: Cooking, car maintenance, yard work
  • Maximum star values: 5-10 stars per chore
  • Meaningful rewards: Freedom, money, special privileges
  • Responsibility focus: Emphasize life preparation over external rewards

Building Intrinsic Motivation

While StarKid uses external rewards, the goal is building internal motivation:

  • Praise effort, not just results: "I love how hard you worked on that!"
  • Highlight family impact: "When you help, our whole family benefits"
  • Connect to values: "Being responsible is an important life skill"
  • Gradual transition: Slowly emphasize the good feeling of helping over star rewards

Common Challenges & Solutions

"My child lost interest"

Solutions: Refresh the rewards, adjust star values, involve them in choosing new chores, take a short break and restart with fanfare.

"Siblings are fighting about fairness"

Solutions: Ensure age-appropriate differences, explain why chores vary, focus on individual progress, consider family team goals.

"Stars are accumulating unused"

Solutions: Add smaller, more immediate rewards, lower star costs, remind children of available rewards, add surprise rewards.

Transitioning Away from StarKid

Eventually, you'll want to reduce reliance on external rewards:

  • Gradual reduction: Slowly decrease frequency of star tracking
  • Internalize success: Emphasize how good helping feels
  • Family identity: "We're a family that helps each other"
  • Life skill focus: Connect chores to adult responsibilities
  • Natural consequences: Let real-world results motivate behavior

Timeline Tip

Most families use StarKid intensively for 3-6 months, then gradually reduce dependence over another 3-6 months as new habits form.
